History of Killeavy Castle

Killeavy Castle is a Grade A listed historical building initially designed in 1836 by architect George Papworth of Dublin. Formally known as Killeavy Lodge, the Foxall family rebuilt their home in the style of the pre-Victorian Gosford Castle with Towers, Tudor windows and a medieval-style door, transforming the modest farmhouse into a home fit for a king.

Situated on the eastern base of Slieve Gullion, the original castle and surrounding grounds brought a new element to the beautiful landscape. The building contained a basement level with a kitchen, storerooms, servant's quarters and an underground tunnel to allow servants to enter and exit the building unseen. Above was a parlour and wine cellar, with an adjoining drawing room, library and conservatory. On the top level were six bedrooms, four dressing rooms and bathrooms. There was a beautiful walled garden and an ornamental water wheel.

The Bell family took ownership of the property in 1881, but in recent years, the building fell into disrepair. Fortunately, the facade remained intact and surrounded by fir plantations and lush farmland, it has been returned to its former glory.

The Architect

George Papworth (1781-1855) was the younger brother of English architect John Buonarotti Papworth. He established himself in Ireland and designed many notable buildings, including Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital and the King's Bridge in Dublin. His drawings of Killeavy were exhibited in the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1836.

Families of Killeavy Castle
The Foxalls: First family of Killeavy Castle

Meredith Foxall was a founder of Moore, McCann and Foxall's Bank of Newry. Although the bank crashed in 1816, the Foxall family still managed to salvage enough funds for Powell Foxall to commission extensive repairs and additions to Killeavy Lodge in 1836. Joseph Foxall and his successor, Powell Foxall, are responsible for the impressive broadleaf woodlands that cover a considerable part of the mountain.

The Gillespies: Second family of Killeavy Castle

From the mid-1860s to the late 1870s, Killeavy Castle was the residence of William Gillespie, who rented it from Joseph Foxall.

The Bells: Third family of Killeavy Castle

The Bell family took ownership of the property in 1881. It has sometimes been referred to as 'Bell's Castle'. Over the years, the value of the property fluctuated dramatically. By 1921, part of the building was empty, and part was rented by John A. Bell. It was valued at only £22. Killeavy Castle remained in the possession of the Bell family until the death of Maureen Bell in 2000.

The Boyles: Current family of Killeavy Castle

The Boyle family took ownership of the Estate in 2013 and began a major redevelopment programme. Mick Boyle emigrated to Australia in the late 1960s with his parents, Michael and Pauline Boyle, who both come from South Armagh. Having such strong connections to the area, the family are determined to return the Estate to its former glory and develop a hospitality and agriculture experience that can be enjoyed for generations to come.
